Former Palm Bay Mayor Melton “Mel” Broom died Saturday.
“Palm Bay has really lost a city volunteer and worker,” said current city Mayor William Capote. “Not only just Palm Bay but Brevard County.”
Broom, who was 90, served as Palm Bay’s mayor from 1993 to 1996.
He had retired as a vice president of General Development Corp., which developed much of Brevard’s largest city.

Broom’s daughter, Ann Marie Chester, confirmed her father’s death on Facebook. He had been in hospice care at his home in West Melbourne, Chester posted previously.
Memorial service plans have not yet been finalized, according to Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home.
